Iraq: An Uncertain Future

Although Iraq has receded from the position of prominence it once occupied on the American political scene, key members of the Obama White House remain charged with the issue and recognize the fragile nature of its future. Can the Maliki regime overcome the enduring differences between major confessional blocs at the local, provincial, and national levels? A Senior Pentagon Planner advises, “Although the ‘playbook’ on AF-Pak is drawing the bulk of high level attention at the moment, we have very deep concerns about Iraq. The reporting out of the embassy in Baghdad has been trending ‘southward’ of late. By the end of this summer we could have a very difficult situation on our hands.”
